From treatment to information organization: reflections on conceptions, perspectives and trends

Synopsis

This work presents a theoretical and historical reflection on the classical notions of information treatment and information organization, based on the epistemological sphere of knowledge organization. It consists of eight chapters that discuss (1) the terminological variations produced in Brazilian and Portuguese Science and Teaching, (2) the discussion of theoretical and conceptual aspects of information organization and representation and their correlation with the practical aspects that involve digital informational environments; (3) the conceptual design inherent to the representation of information made from the discussion of cataloging as a confluence of descriptive, thematic, contextual and access to information aspects so that the interconnection between them is assured; (4) the different theoretical and methodological perspectives on domain modeling applied to the elaboration of information representation and retrieval tools, in the context of electronic information and communication networks; (5) the identification and exploitation of aspects of terminological variation in scientific production on Information Organization relating to the terms Documentary Analysis and Subject Analysis; (6) information resource representation applications, contexts and processes where innovations derived from computer science, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, and new database platforms have transformed the context of data production. documents, knowledge organization systems, semantic exploration and visualization methods.

Author Biographies

Maria da Graça Simões, University of Coimbra

She was Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra, in the Course of Information Science Archivistics and Librarianship, where she ensures the subjects related to the Organization of knowledge (since 19998). She holds a PhD in Information Science from the University of Salamanca (2010), a Master's Degree (2007) in Information Science from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra, a Postgraduate Diploma in Documentary Sciences from the Faculty of Letters of the University of Coimbra (1991), a Postgraduate Diploma in European Studies from the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra (1993) and a Degree in History from the same University (1989). She has authored several monographs and articles published in national and international journals, mainly on Information representation and knowledge organisation.

Gercina Ângela de Lima is a Post-doctorate in Studies on methodologies for the process of indexing textual documents, from the Department of Librarianship and Documentation, Faculdad de Humanidades, Comunicación y Documentación, Universidad Carlos III, Madrid, Spain, and from the School of Arts and Communication of USP. PhD in Information Science from the Graduate Programme in Information Science PPGCI-ECI/UFMG. Master in Science in Library Service - Clark Atlanta University,USA. Librarian by the Library School of UFMG. Full Professor at the Department of Organization and Information Processing, ECI/UFMG. Productivity Fellow (PQ) at CNPq, Level 2. Mining Researcher Programme Fellow - PPM/ FAPEMIG-MG. Coordinator of the MHTX Research Group - Conceptual Modeling for the Organization and Representation of Hypertextual Information, registered at CNPq since 2004. Researcher in the Graduate Program in Knowledge Management & Organization-PPGGOC/ECI/UFMG. She is currently a Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO), and of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of the 20th Century of the University of Coimbra, Portugal.
